The athletic scandal that has engulfed Rutgers University following the firing of head basketball coach Mike Rice, after being caught on video physically and verbally abusing players, continues today with Athletic Director Tim Pernetti announcement that he’s stepping down.

Pernetti’s resignation raises a number of questions about the schools handling of the scandal including University President Robert Barchi’s knowledge of the tape. Barchi admits that he knew about the video and its contents back in November but did not take the time to look at it until Tuesday of this week.

“This was a failure of process; I regret that I did not ask to see the video when Tim first told me of its existence because I am certain that this situation would have had a very different outcome had I done so.”

In Pernetti’s letter of resignation to Barchi, he expressed his regret for not firing Rice back in November and says though it was his first instinct he was advised by university lawyers not to.
