Kentucky Senator Rand Paul was the highlight of a rally in Clark on Tuesday afternoon for the Republican hoping to be New Jersey’s next U.S. Senator.

Rand Paul addressed a crowd of more than 200 supporters, telling them Steve Lonegan will uphold the conservative libertarian principles they share. But he also addressed the poll numbers that show Democratic candidate Cory Booker with a comfortable lead over Lonegan.

“Steve Lonegan can win, and he only wins in a blue state like this if you go out and you turn every friend out and then make some new friends and turn them out also. But Republicans can win in New Jersey, the same way we can win in a presidential election, if we become a bigger party.”

Paul says he thinks Lonegan could be the person to grow the Republican party. Lonegan agrees and says he believes his campaign’s focus on preserving individual liberties has broad appeal to voters.
