Pro-Immigrant Group Lobbys for Child Citizen Protection Act

A pro-immigration group wants to help children who are American citizens, but whose parents are threatened with deportation.

A group of children and advocates from the American Friends Service Commission chanted outside the Federal Building in Newark. They were there to lobby local congress members to co-sponsor the Child Citizen Protection Act that would allow children to testify at their parents’ deportation hearings.

Florinda Beqiri’s aunt and uncle are primary caregivers for her younger brother and their five children. They are now at risk of being sent back to Albania.

“To send the parents back, the kids would have to go back to a different environment. They don’t know how to speak the language, to write it, read it or anything.”

The bill has been reintroduced by New York Congressman Jose Serrano and referred to the house subcommittee on immigration. But with a Republican-controlled legislature, Serrano’s spokesman says the law’s future is uncertain.
