Results are in, in the Newark School District advisory board elections. The three candidates who ran on the “Children First” ticket came out on top.

Khalil Rashidi, Ariagna Perello and Rashon Hasan ran on a unified ticket backed by South Ward Councilman and mayoral candidate Ras Baraka. Hasan says regaining local control of the state-run district is their first priority.

“Having local control is one thing but having local control but not having a  plan to maintain it to ensure that  once we receive local control that we can move forward and put the district in a position where every child is gonna be successful is very key.”

The Advisory Board is currently suing the state to regain control of the schools. Hasan says he believes the law is on their side and says NJ Education Commissioner Chris Cerf is stalling.
