The Newark Police department honored some of its officers today (Thursday) who have displayed courage in the line of duty.

City Officials commended the officers for showing courage and leadership in the often dangerous and challenging situations they are faced with everyday. The emergency services unit was given special recognition for their work during hurricane sandy. Police chief Sheila Coley says they went above and beyond in the city’s time of need.

“When Newark became flooded they were driving in dump trucks and everything else that they could find and when it was no longer passable they actually went out in boats and rescued people and when people see us they think that we are just out here preventing crime and we do so much more on a daily basis.”

Coley says police often take a lot of criticism but in times of crisis they are always the first to respond.
