On the heels of two recent shootings in Newark, City officials are urging the state and federal government to take immediate action on new gun control measures.

Mayor Booker announced two arrests in the March 18th bodega shooting that left one dead. He’s asking for the help of the community catch the suspect in last week’s Ihop shooting.

“The call really is for community engagement and involvement at a different level, modest reductions in crime are unsatisfactory in our city we’ve got to go further.”

Booker was joined by Councilman Ras Baraka who says these recent crimes are even more reason for action on a national level.

“Unless we get some help from the state and the federal government on this we’re always going to be having these kinds of press conferences announcing the kind of devastation that we’re witnessing on our streets.”

According to Mayor Booker every gun police recovered in connection with a crime last year was bought illegally out of state.
