Fresh off securing the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate on Tuesday night, former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan is starting off his general election campaign by continuing to criticize Democratic opponent Cory Booker.

Against the backdrop of Booker’s election night headquarters at the Prudential Center in downtown Newark, Lonegan lobbed criticisms at Mayor Booker for how he’s handled economic growth in the city.

“Cory Booker does not understand that the private sector is the driving force behind the economic prosperity of this nation, and if unleashed and left to its own abilities, will grow this economy. Not the government subsidies that are helping—or trying—to grow Newark.”

Booker Campaign spokesman Kevin Griffis says Mayor Booker has used every opportunity at his disposal to bring new businesses and jobs to Newark.

“It would be irresponsible for a leader to look at a tactic or look at an opportunity on the table and decide that they didn’t want to use that if it would benefit the people of a community."

The special Senate election will be held on October 16th.
