Newark’s Arts High School is getting some much needed help recovering from a fire that left performing arts school without a performance space.

Students from the high school performed at Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey’s annual showcase to raise money for the repairs. Part of the building as well as some valuable equipment was damaged by an electrical fire last year including the school’s auditorium. Arts High School Principal Lynn Irby-Jackson says they are grateful to have this opportunity.

“Needless to say as a performing arts school it totally caused us to shut down we haven’t been able to do any performances in over a year and we’re waiting for state funding to also assist in renovating the entire auditorium.”

Irby-Jackson says they have already received donations from Horizon including furniture and equipment for classrooms and studio space.
