Grand Opening Of Baxter Park Marks New Era For Housing In Newark

A new era in housing has begun in Newark….today marks the grand opening of Baxter Park.
What was formerly Baxter Terrace, which had become one of the city’s most notorious housing projects, is now the site of the brand new eco friendly housing development, Baxter Park. The first 90 units of the low income public housing development are already occupied. Keith Kinard, executive director of the Newark Housing Authority, says projects like this are important to restoring the city’s image.
“Between the number of people that get on the train at broad street station and the number of people who get off 280 from here, it’s much better that they see a professionally managed well maintained development than what we had here in the past as their first impression in or last impression out.”
The project on the 10 acre site will eventually include another 300 units along with a supermarket, recreational facilities, and other retail space.
