The race for the Democratic spot in the 34th district state Senate primary was anticipated to be one of the tightest of the night. But incumbent Senator Nia Gill easily defeated challenger Mark Alexander.
It was a race that pitted two popular Montclair residents against each other – both of them Democrats with big supporters behind them.
Senator Nia Gill credited her win to her more than 20 years in the New Jersey legislature.
“Fighting to protect public school education, advocating for women’s rights, expanding health care and providing access to high-paying jobs.”
But there were other political factors at work including a hotly contested mayoral race in East Orange and Gill’s spot on gubernatorial candidate Senator Barbara Buono’s ticket.
Gill expects to keep her seat in the heavily democratic district come November. But she says there’s more work to be done in Trenton before then.
