Framework Complete For New Hotel In Downtown Newark
By Katie Colaneri, WBGO News
Newark. February 2, 2012
The last steel beam is in place for the new hotel in downtown Newark. Officials say it’s the next step toward making the city’s downtown a 24/7 operation.
Hardhats were a must to walk through the site where backhoes and dirt piles will soon be replaced by street-level retail stores and a 150-bed hotel.
Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Adam Zipkin says the mixed-use building will bring as many as 70 jobs for Newark residents.
“There are ongoing negotiations with various retailers. I think there will be at least one restaurant.”
He says it’ll also give a wide variety of visitors like pro-sports teams and concert-goers a place to crash.
“I think that business travelers that are flying through Newark that in the past might have had really limited options and stayed over by the airport will now have something in the downtown.”
With the framework of the hotel now complete and a mild winter keeping construction moving, the hotel is expected to open in September.
