Fans Hold Their Own Memorial For Whitney Houston in Newark

The world said goodbye to Whitney Houston on Saturday as family and friends of the pop queen gathered for a private funeral at the Newark church where her voice was first discovered. Hundreds of Houston’s fans also showed their support.
Inside New Hope Baptist Church on Sussex Street, the star-studded funeral included vocal tributes by Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.
Three blocks away, fans held their own memorial of sorts behind temporary police barricades.
Shanelle Brandon and her sister drove from Baltimore, Maryland at 4 a.m. just to stand with other fans on Jay Street.
Brandon, like many others, was disappointed the Houston family decided to exclude the public that made her famous.
“No disrespect to them but at the same time, Whitney is Whitney because her fans loved her.”
So, without even a glimpse of her casket, they paid homage to the Queen of Pop the best way they knew how: to sing her music.
