New Jersey’s largest public workers union has made its choice for the next mayor of Newark.

Dozens of union members from Communication Workers of America stood with South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka as the union announced it was endorsing him for mayor.

Baraka says his campaign is about creating a grassroots movement to transform the city and that he needs the help of unions like the CWA to make that happen.

“Smart individuals have been elected for a bunch of years. They have not been able to fix the problems that we have in our community, so it’s not just about smart individuals—it’s about all of us, our collective IQ. It’s about our interests together. The city can’t grow unless the working people of this community grow.”

The union has promised to put boots on the ground in support of Baraka in the months leading up to May’s election, where he’ll face fellow Councilmen Anibal Ramos and Darrin Sharif as well as former State Assistant Attorney General Shavar Jeffries.
