Republican candidate Steven Lonegan has another high-profile endorsement in the race for a U.S. Senate seat from New Jersey.
A day after Governor Christie expressed support for Lonegan, he’s received the endorsement of the man Christie selected to fill Frank Lautenberg’s seat until the October 16th special election.
At an event with the candidate in Toms River, Senator Jeff Chiesa says he agrees with Lonegan that the nation has a spending problem, and Lonegan will fight to control it.
“He understood that the way to really improve our lives is to make sure that we spend what we have and we spend in smartly, and we make decisions as a country that put us in a position to be strong, put us in a position to be respected, and put us in a position to do the things that we’ve always stood for.”
Lonegan says the endorsements are showing his campaign is gaining momentum.
“There’s a real energy on the ground that I feel everywhere I go. Everywhere I go there’s packed houses and it’s summer. I mean it’s August, and you don’t see this in August, but we’re seeing it everywhere.”
A Monmouth University poll shows Democrat Cory Booker with a 16 point lead in the Senate race, but Lonegan believes it’s getting tighter. He says after Christie’s endorsement, money for his campaign is coming in from all over the country.
