On October 22, three major candidates in the New Jersey Governor’s race met and debated on WBGO Jazz 88.3FM (Newark Public Radio, Inc.). The debate was produced and moderated by WBGO News Director, Doug Doyle.

In the first part (July 30, 2009) of this special two-part series, a collaboration with WNYC, our group of panelists takes a look at the impact on the central Brooklyn communities of Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. hosted by WBGO News Director Doug Doyle, we were joined by community activists and stake-holders who shared their experiences, thoughts, and observations about Newark and did a little brainstorming about possible solutions.

Conversations with Allan Wolper is an exciting new podcast from WBGO News. Each month Allan chats with unique personalities whose ideas are on the cutting edge. This half-hour show will be sure to raise eyebrows. Allan Wolper is also a regular contributor to The WBGO Journal. He is a journalism professor at Rutgers-Newark and an award-winning columnist with Editor and Publisher Magazine.
DOW DIRECT
In our ongoing effort to connect listeners with the region's top newsmakers, on May 28, 2008, WBGO News presented Dow Direct, a live one-hour call in show with Essex County's top law enforcer, Prosecutor Paula Dow. The conversation hosted by WBGO news director Doug Doyle touched on a range of topics affecting county residents and beyond, including gangs, homicides, drugs, juvenile justice and domestic violence. The program aired live on WBGO 88.3FM and streamed live on-line at wbgo.org.

We Insist!: Jazz Speaks Out is a multi-part series exploring the impact of jazz music on social change movements and African-American history and culture. The series features conversations with musicians, authors and educators who have studied the music and its impact, experienced it first hand and, in some cases, created it.

On January 31st, WBGO's Andrew Meyer hosts a one-hour call in show with Newark Schools Superintendent Marion Bolden, who retires at the end of the current school year. The audience gets a chance to ask Bolden about her accomplishments, shortcomings and what's in store for Newark's next superintendent.
WBGO NEWS PRESENTS: REMEMBERING 1967
On July 12th, 1967, rumors of a deadly shooting by the Newark police sparked five days of violence that left 26 people dead, devastated large parts of the city, and drastically changed the landscape of the city and the national perspective of Newark. WBGO News will present a half-hour special "Remembering 1967," 7:30pm on July 12th, immediately prior to Newark Today looking back at the riots, including a documentary produced by former WBGO News Director and current NPR Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep.. Our coverage continues at 8:00 pm with a one-hour live discussion and call-in show with Mayor Cory Booker. Our coverage concludes Friday night at 7:30 on a special edition of the WBGO Journal.
