WBGO NEWS SCORES BIG WINS AT 2004 PRNDI WBGO News Department a big winner at the 2004 PRNDI (July 30, 2004) The WBGO News Department was a big winner at the 2004 PRNDI (Public Radio News Directors Incorporated) Awards Competition. The awards were announced at the Washington Marriott in Washington, D.C.
WBGO tied North Country Public Radio in New York for the most awards in Division B, stations with three or four full-time news employees. WBGO received 2 First place awards and 2 Second place awards in the national competition
First Place – Breaking News - "Blackout 2003"
Coverage anchored by Doug Doyle with field reports from Terry Sheridan in NYC, David Cruz in Jersey City and Jonathan Miller in Newark. The judges said "The WBGO news department was clearly on top of this major, breaking story. The reports included important information, as well as anecdotes and reactions from the scene. The presentation was lively and no nonsense."
First Place – News and Public Affairs Program – "WBGO Journal"
The judges based this first place award on a compilation of shows hosted by Doug Doyle, Andrew Meyer and David Cruz featuring reports from entire news department, commentaries as well as reviews from arts critic Michael Bourne. They called the Journal, "Energetic and thoughtful local journalism in the information capital of the world, and arguably its toughest news market. Excellent indentification of local stories addressing national issues. The WBGO Journal is smoothly produced with good writing, consistently strong editing and high technical production standards, pacing itself and embracing the station's jazz identity with graceful use of music."

Second Place –Interview – "Nicky the Jazz Cat"
An interviewed conducted by Andrew Meyer with the author of a new child's book.
The judges wrote, "An interview that is more likeable with each passing moment. The blend of words and classic Jazz cuts with the ever-present ‘Nicky the cat' gets under your skin and invites you to sample the catnip."

Second Place – Commentary – "Fruitcake"
Father Hugh Burns defends the holiday treat with his family's recipe.
The judges' comments: "Father Burns' delivery is personable and professional, and he writes well."
