News Team Sweeps Radio Awards at 2003 Black Journalists Awards Dinner

News Team Sweeps Radio Awards

The WBGO news team has once again won top honors at the annual Garden State Association of Black Journalists awards dinner, sweeping most of the awards in the radio news categories. The news team, led by News Director Doug Doyle, also won four major awards from the New York chapter of the Association of Black Journalists. The team finished first and second place in the following categories:

First Place

  • Doug Doyle, Sports Award, "Rickey in Newark," report on Ricky Henderson’s time playing with the Newark Bears
  • Doug Doyle and Jonathan Miller, Profile Award, "W.E.B. DuBois"
  • Doug Doyle, Breaking News Award, "Affirmative Action" (First place Spot/General News award, New York chapter)
  • David Cruz, Community Impact Award, "Crumbling Coalition," report on the riff between Latino and African-American lawmakers in New Jersey (Second place General Features award, New York chapter)
  • Ernie Garrett and Doug Doyle, Features Award, "Capoeira"
Second Place
  • David Cruz, Profile Award, "Emboldened Bolden," report on Marion Bolden’s battle to keep her job as superintendent of Newark public schools
  • Andrew Meyer and Eugene Sonn, Community Impact Award, "End of Racial Profiling" (First place General Features award, New York chapter)
  • Andrew Meyer, Features Award, "Beyond Gumbo," an interview with the author of a cookbook (First place Arts/Entertainment award, New York chapter)

Doyle anchors the morning news with Morning Jazz host Gary Walker and is co-host of the WBGO Journal. Doyle has picked up numerous first-place news and sports awards in various state and national competitions, the NJ Association of Professional Journalists, Associated Press, Public Radio News Directors, Inc. and many other similar organizations. Doyle also works for Shadow Sports in Rutherford where he anchors the weekend sportscast for 1010 WINS.

David Cruz anchors the noon newscast with Mid-Day Jazz host Rhonda Hamilton, in addition to his feature reporter duties for WBGO. Andrew Meyer is the news anchor on Afternoon Jazz with host Michael Bourne. He is also a news reporter, and both he and Cruz co-host and produce the WBGO Journal. Eugene Sonn is a feature reporter and the WBGO statehouse correspondent. Jonathan Miller is a stringer in the WBGO news department. Ernie Garrett is a broadcast journalism student completing his senior year at Florida A&M University. He has received the prestigious FAMU Presidential Scholarship, a full academic award, his four years at the University. Garrett completed a three month internship in the WBGO news department this past summer.

The Garden State and New York chapters of the National Association of Black Journalists are large and vibrant affiliates. The NY chapter has over 450 members. Both chapters are dedicated to encouraging journalism that is fair, balanced, expansive and inclusive.
