2003 PUBLIC RADIO NEWS DIRECTORS, INC. (PRNDI) AWARDS

WBGO NEWS TEAM RECEIVES TOP HONORS

The WBGO news team has once again received top honors for its superior news reports and interviews. The Public Radio News Directors, Inc. held their annual awards in Montreal, Canada and WBGO representatives were on hand to receive three awards. Feature reporter and noon newscast anchor, David Cruz won the first place best interview category for his interview with Helene Stapinski, the author of "Five Finger Discount." Ms. Stapinski talked about growing up amongst petty thieves and other criminals in her family. One judge commented the interview "moves so smoothly, it feels like we're eavesdropping on a cocktail party conversation. We laughed and were horrified at the same time about the guest's crime family. Makes you want to read her book."

The WBGO News Team also received second place honors for Best Public Affairs Program for the "WBGO Journal- Housing" episode, hosted by reporter Andrew Meyer, which aired December 27, 2002. It featured reports by news team member Eugene Sonn and News Director, Doug Doyle. The morning newscast, anchored by Doug Doyle, won second place best newscast, for his report on the "Treffinger Scandal." The entire WBGO news team contributed to this report which focused on the scandal surrounding former Essex County Executive Jim Treffinger.

Over the past year the WBGO News Dept. has received several major awards from the NJ Association of Professional Journalists, Associated Press, NY Association of Black Journalists, and many other similar organizations.
