NJ LAWMAKERS CONSIDER MEASURE TO PAVE WAY FOR SPORTS WAGERING

Trenton - (WBGO News 2/8/2010)

State lawmakers are considering a measure that would help clear the way for sports betting at New Jersey casinos and racetracks.

Sports wagering in the Garden State is now banned by federal law.

State Senator Ray Lesniak has sued to overturn that ban. He says a proposed Constitutional Amendment would allow voters to authorize the legislature to move ahead with a sports betting plan.

“Hopefully we’ll be voting on it in November and we’ll get the law changed  so that the next Super Bowl New Jersey residents will be just like the  people that go to Las Vegas and be able to place their bets down.”

Lesniak says sports betting could generate more than a hundred million dollars a year in revenue for the state and increase tourism in Atlantic City.
