Trenton - (WBGO News 1/20/2010)

Governor Chris Christie has signed an executive order that designating New Jersey Casino Control Commission employees as essential state workers.

The order is aimed at preventing a repeat of the casino closings in Atlantic City that occurred over the Independence Day weekend in 2006 when state government shutdown because of a stalemate in getting a new budget enacted.

Assemblyman Vince Polistina says ensuring the casinos stay open is important for tourism and has statewide implications.

“There is not only impact with the employees, to the people who business directly with the state, but it’s a statewide impact from vendors that may send food there or paper products or all these things that the casino industry supports.”

Governor Christie says the order is a preventative measure and does not signal there may be another government shutdown ahead.
