65,000 NEW JERSEY RESIDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

Trenton - (WBGO News 11/6/2009)

An estimated 65-thousand New Jersey residents are eligible to receive extended unemployment insurance benefits thanks to an economic stimulus bill signed by the President.

The legislation provides an extra 20 weeks of unemployment benefits for those who’ve already reached a maximum 79 weeks of payments.

State Labor Commissioner David Socolow says jobless New Jerseyans who qualify for the extension will have to wait until November 25th to certify they were out of work for the weeks ending November 14th and 21st.

“You don’t receive unemployment insurance benefits until you’ve experienced those two weeks of unemployment which are the first two weeks available under this bill. It’s not a retroactive legislation.”

Up to four thousand out-of -work people in the Garden State reach the 79 week benefit limit each week. Even as the economy improves, Socolow says it will be some time before employers start to add new workers.
