NYC VOTER PREVIEW

Newark - (WBGO News 11/2/2009)

New Yorkers will decide who will run the Big Apple in the 2009 General Election.

It’s been a contentious and expensive race to decide who will be New York City’s next mayor. Incumbent Michael Bloomberg has spent roughly $85 million of his own money for a third term. His democratic opponent City Comptroller Bill Thompson is seen as the underdog in the election, but did gain the endorsement of President Barack Obama.

Other citywide elections are for Public Advocate, City Comptroller, all five Borough Presidents, and City Council representatives in many of New York City's 51 districts.

Also being decided are races for the Supreme Court and Civil Court. Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morganthau is retiring after nine terms in office. Democrat Cy Vance won the primary last September, and faces no opponent in the general election.

Voters will weigh in on two ballot questions. The first one could have the Legislature transfer up to six acres of forest in St. Lawrence County to National Grid for construction of a powerline. The second question will determine if inmates in state and local correctional facilities to perform work for nonprofit organizations.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
