Trenton - (WBGO News 10/30/2009)

With the general election just days away, New Jersey officials are releasing information abut the number of registered voters in the state.

Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells says 5.2 million Garden State residents are registered to vote, about the same number as in last year's Presidential election.  A record four million people actually cast their ballots in New Jersey a year ago.

"There are 500-thousand new registered voters since the 2005 gubernatorial elections. Based upon that number you could certainly see an increase over the last gubernatorial."

About 49 percent of registered voters turned out for the election for Governor four years ago.

Wells says there were 180-thousand requests for ballots in the new statewide vote-by-mail program, and 100-thousand of them have been returned to county boards of elections.  They'll be tallied on election day.
