CORZINE SAYS IT'LL ONLY GET HARDER

Trenton - (WBGO News 12/22/2008)

Governor Jon Corzine held his end of the year news conference today. Setting the tone for 2009, he says he doesn’t expect anything to get any easier in the year to come.

It’s been a tough year for Governor Corzine. His most recent plan to delay pension payments floundered in the Senate. And his ethics reform package hasn’t gone anywhere. Corzine says he’s not crazy about being unpopular with lawmakers. But he’s determined to do what’s right.

“Let’s actually get in front of the curve as opposed to staying with it and waiting for some other shoe to fall, to drop, to get to a conclusion. I feel very strongly about that. It’s not exactly a love fest with regard to those issues.”

Corzine says next year, besides the economy, he’ll also be pushing lawmakers on the environment and campaign finance reform. He says it may be a reelection year for him but he’s not afraid to make cuts needed to balance the budget.
