Live Broadcast from J&R Jazz Festival - Friday, August 22, 5 - 8 p.m.
    Monifa Brown, host of Saturday Afternoon Jazz is going downtown Friday night! J&R Music World is holding its annual free summer jazz festival, August 22 from 5 - 8 p.m and you and Monifa will be there, live on WBGO. And what a line-up! It starts with vocalist and drummer Grady Tate at 5p.m., followed by pianist Cyrus Chestnut at 6 p.m., and trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard at 7 p.m. Blanchard will be interviewed on WBGO by Morning Jazz host, Gary Walker, just the day before, Thursday, August 21 at 9:00 a.m. He'll be talking about his new Blue Note release Bounce. So join us, right across from City Hall, or on 88.3FM.

What do Gary and Dizzy have in common?
    And speaking of WBGO Morning Jazz host and Music Director Gary Walker, he regaled us with one of his favorite WBGO moments recently, about the time he hosted Benny Carter's 75th Birthday Party. One of the most memorable things about it was an encounter with jazz great Dizzy Gillespie over cranberry juice! To find out more go to wbgo.org/contest.

"The Roots of Rock Blues Photography"
    In recognition of the "Year of the Blues, WBGO will be presenting the blues photography of Rita Weigand. Her exhibit, "The Roots of Rock Blues Photography," will be on display in the WBGO Gallery, Monday through Friday during regular business hours, Now - October 3. A reception and open house for Ms. Weigand's exhibit will be held at WBGO Studios on Thursday, August 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. All are welcome. Ms. Weigand is a former staff photographer for Blues Revue Magazine and contributor to Billboard and numerous other publications.

Charlie Parker Festival August 23 & 24
    Gary Bartz - one of The Three Altos performing this Saturday!Last summer, they said it wouldn't happen again. But when the City Parks Foundation took over the annual Charlie Parker Festival, guess what?! It's happening! Join Jazz After Hours host Brian Delp on Saturday at Marcus Garvey Park (125th St.in Harlem) and on Sunday in Tompkins Square Park (Avenue A and St. Marks Place in Manhattan). Performances each day begin at 3p.m. with Russell Anderson, Carla Cook, Roy Haynes and the Three Altos -- Gary Bartz, Sonny Fortune and Vincent Herring -- performing on Saturday; and Arthur Blythe, Charles MacPherson, Lonnie Plaxico, and Jeff "Tain" Watts performing Sunday.

    It's one of those final summer blow-ins. Come by, listen and say hello.

Live Broadcast from Tanglewood Jazz Festival, August 29
    This just in. WBGO will partner with Boston powerhouse WGBH to produce a live broadcast from the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, Friday August 29, from 8 - 11p.m. Performers include Jonathan "Juanito" Pascual, flamenco guitar; the Michel Camilo Trio and Gato Barbieri's quintet. Our own Midday Jazz host Rhonda Hamilton will be there along with WGBH jazz host Steve Schwartz.

Labor Day - Detroit Jazz and Dave Brubeck on WBGO
  • The Best of the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival, 12:00 - 2:00 pm
  • An Intimate Conversation with Dave Brubeck: Downbeat Magazine Interview broadcast on WBGO with Michael Bourne, 2:00 - 3:00 pm
    Tune in to hear a special two-hour broadcast of the best of the 2002 Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 12:00 to 2:00 pm. The Detroit fest is regarded internationally as one of the best jazz festivals each year. The special is narrated by acclaimed jazz pianist Gerri Allen and features performances by Allen, as well as, Gerald Gibbs, Branford Marsalis, Chuchito Valdes, Jr., Straight Ahead, Rodney Whitaker, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Frank Morgan, the National Jazz Orchestra of Detroit, Pete Fountain, Curtis Stigers, Carl Allen, Regina Carter and Joey DeFrancesco.

    Then Michael Bourne goes way back with Dave Brubeck. At 2p.m. on Labor Day share this exclusive interview with the jazz pioneer. Bourne's interview is both the cover story of September's Downbeat Magazine and is being broadcast on WBGO. "This interview was so musical," said Bourne, "because he played for me throughout the whole thing, and that is what you'll hear on WBGO. Listen in.

    The biggest challenge of all is getting those who listen to WBGO, but do not support us, to become members. That's where our New Member Challenge Fund comes in. Each $50 contribution to our New Member Challenge Fund, before the fund drive, will be used to challenge a new member to join during our Fiscal Finale Fund Drive, beginning Sept. 12. News Team Receives Top Honors at 2003 PRNDI Awards
    The WBGO news team has once again received top honors for its superior news reports and interviews. The Public Radio News Directors, Inc. (PRINDI) held their annual awards in Montreal, Canada and WBGO representatives were on hand to receive three awards. Feature reporter and noon newscast anchor, David Cruz won the first place Best Interview category for his interview with Helene Stapinski, the author of "Five Finger Discount." Ms. Stapinski talked about growing up amongst petty thieves and other criminals in her family.

    The WBGO News Team also received second place honors for Best Public Affairs Program for the "WBGO Journal- Housing" episode, hosted by reporter Andrew Meyer, which aired December 27, 2002. It featured reports by news team member Eugene Sonn and News Director, Doug Doyle. Also, the morning newscast, anchored by Doug Doyle, won second place Best Newscast, for his report on the "Treffinger Scandal.

    WBGO's end-of-the-fiscal year meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held at the Rutgers Law School, 123 Washington Street in Newark, on Monday, September 22 at 6:00 pm. The public is welcome.
