WBGO Jazz 88.3FM is the premier jazz public radio station in the country. Within public radio, WBGO is regarded as a leader for: producing and presenting exciting local and national programming; its community and volunteer involvement; special events and travel programs; collaborations with local, national & international artists.


The position of Major Gifts officer presents an exciting opportunity for a qualified candidate who has a desire to become a part of a well-established and highly respected organization heading into a new era of development. Celebrating its 35th Anniversary, WBGO is in the midst of developing and implementing strategic plans for the next 3 to 5 years and beyond.

The role of Major Gifts Officer is a chance for an individual with creativity, initiative and positive energy, to meaningfully engage with both our current and future supporters in enthusiastically communicating the mission of our organization. WBGO is unique in servicing two core communities: the jazz community, the great American art form and related music, and our local community. In addition, WBGO has both a national and international network of members and supporters via the accessibility of our content on multiple platforms.

WBGO’s fund-raising efforts are critical to its continued success. The Major Gifts Officer plays an important role in the short and long term goals of the organization, notably the expansion of a comprehensive major gifts program aimed at increasing the number of major donors and major gifts from individuals.

He or she will work with senior management to identify and build relationships both inside and outside the organization that will maximize the value of WBGO to its listeners and contributors, and convert that value into financial support.

They will work closely with the Directors of Development & Membership in formulating fund-raising strategies, while implementing the daily database management of our major donors’ accounts and the ongoing cultivation and engagement with them, essential to WBGO’s attainment of its fund-raising goals.

This position requires the ability to work within a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends, as special events and individual donor cultivations are primary responsibilities key to the overall success of the position and the organization.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Exceptional stewardship and communication with major donors and prospects
  • Cultivation and solicitation of major gifts
  • A primary focus on increasing the number of major donors at the $1,200 + annual level
  • Active involvement in the station’s major on-air fund-raising campaigns: currently in February, May and September, plus a 3-day effort at the end of the Calendar year
  • Fine tuning the skills of frequent and meaningful acknowledgements of our supporters


WBGO seeks a visionary, team-oriented professional with a College degree and progressively responsible and successful experience and skills in the areas of: fundraising, sales & marketing and/or business development. Experience in the Arts is preferred, but not required.

The successful candidate will also have these qualifications and experiences:

  • Highly-developed oral and written communication, phone and grammar skills
  • Professional appearance and demeanor and good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Familiarity with major donor and other fundraising techniques

A knowledge of jazz and related music forms and their history is not required but preferred, as many of our major donors and prospects are passionate and well versed in these art forms.
