Starry Nights at the Rose Center

Live Broadcast from the American Museum of Natural History's Rose Center, October 3 at 5:30 pm

Paquito D'Rivera The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) will present its Starry Nights jazz concert series once a month from the Rose Center for Earth and Space, Hall of the Universe. WBGO will broadcast the concerts live to metro New York and around the world. There will be a total of six live broadcasts in all throughout the year. The upcoming broadcast dates are October 3 and December 5.

The featured artist for the October 3 concert will be Paquito D'Rivera. Born in Havana, Cuba, Paquito was a child prodigy playing the clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra at an early age. In 1979 he was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Ensemble. He defected to the United States in 1981. Since that time he has emerged as a leader in promoting cross-cultural and multinational styles of music. Paquito's musical versatility and wide range of influences allows him to move effortlessly from playing bebop to Latin to classical music. His career has taken him around the world and he is becoming increasingly well-known for his skills as a composer.

Starry Nights premiered in 2000, the year the museum's Rose Center opened to great acclaim for its superb architectural design and was hailed as the newest icon for New York City. From the stage in the Hall of the Universe on the lower level of the Rose Center, the music soars through the 335,000-square-foot glass enclosed monumental structure. The audience sits at café tables under the centerpiece of the Rose Center: the 87-foot-diameter, 4-million pound Hayden Planetarium sphere.

Visitors to Starry Nights, which is free with suggested Museum admission, enjoy live music, tapas and beverages in a truly unique setting, every first Friday of the month throughout the year.
