Live at the Village Vanguard, WBGO's monthly broadcast series, caught fire in 2008. Already a host to Bill Charlap, Anat Cohen, Brian Blade, Kenny Barron, Chris Potter, Ravi Coltrane Quartet and the Cedar Walton Trio, the 2009 season continues to heat up with a Grammy© winner, a two nominees.
WBGO/Jazz88.3FM and NPR Music joined forces with the legendary Village Vanguard in June 2008 to offer a monthly jazz concert series that is webcast and broadcast live with free streaming at www.npr.org/villagevanguard.
The Live at the Village Vanguard series has upped the ante when it comes to presenting jazz programming in a completely fresh way, using multi-platform media to heighten the jazz experience. Visitors can experience all elements of a live performance by streaming the concerts, and participating in the live chat room, hosted by WBGO's Josh Jackson. Jackson also gives his personal take on all behind-the-scene elements from inside of the club via a live blog, providing up-to-the-minute observations. Participators are also able to view photos from the concert as it happens via Flicker, an online photo management and sharing application gallery, giving the visitors the total concert experience.
The series kicked off 2009 with a performance from guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. His performance is available for download as a podcast, as is the performance of three time Grammy© winner Terence Blanchard, who performed February 18 on the series. Two songs from Ed Simon’s performance are also available.
Grammy© nominated saxophonist David Sanchez took the Village Vanguard stage on March 17 with his quartet, performing material from Sanchez’s recent recording, Cultural Survival. The season continued on April 8 with Grammy© nominee and multi-year winner of DownBeat Magazine’s jazz trumpeter of the year, Tom Harrell.
The Village Vanguard is arguably the Mecca of jazz performance venues. Well into its seventh decade, the Vanguard is revered around the world for its rich history, its continued commitment to jazz, and its near-perfect acoustics. This spring, WBGO/Jazz 88.3 FM celebrates its 30th anniversary as the premiere jazz broadcaster in the country. Last fall, National Public Radio (NPR) launched the highly anticipated NPR Music site - a free, comprehensive music discovery destination, featuring content from NPR, WBGO and the other NPR Member public radio stations.
