WBGO has received a My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
The My Source Community Impact Awards for Engagement were created by CPB to give well-deserved recognition to stations for their commitment and responsiveness to their communities, providing innovative services -- on- air, online, and in- person -- that have measureable results.
“WBGO has direct access to the entire community via its broadcast, on line and in-person communication platforms,” said WBGO General Manager Cephas Bowles.
“Through these platforms, we can share those important moments and experiences that help illuminate and define us as individuals and as communities. We serve as the actual and virtual town square where listeners both receive and disseminate information and cultural enrichment,” he said. “WBGO recognizes the uniqueness of its stage and uses it to benefit the entire local community. To do anything less would be to squander this amazing and enviable asset.”
WBGO was cited for its educational outreach and youth initiatives, helping to perpetuate the art of jazz, through the free WBGO Kids Jazz Series, its Jazzamatazz children’s newsletter and Jazz Appreciation Month live broadcast in April with high school and college jazz bands from the local community.
“From the economy to the environment, from health concerns to arts education, public broadcasting stations are a trusted source of information and engagement for all Americans,” said Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. “CPB congratulates WBGO for its outstanding work.”
WBGO’s project will be recognized at the Public Radio Development and Marketing Conference on July 8 in San Diego, California.

Rhonda Hamilton joins celebrity chef, educator, and TV host Sara Moulton in her New York City Chelsea apartment for a little Q&A and a whole lotta cooking. Sara shares with Rhonda her love of food and jazz while the pair prepare a three course meal with recipes from Sara’s book Sara’s Weeknight Meals. The sampling includes salmon cakes with corn salsa, Det Burgers (named after the creator of the recipe), and fresh, stuffed strawberries. With culinary-inspired jazz stirred in the mix, Rhonda and Sara steam up the kitchen -- a show not-to-be-missed by any with a passion for music, food, and life.
