Listen to the Spanish Harlem Orchestra perform live at WBGO for a special edition of the Latin Jazz Cruise.

This thirteen-piece ensemble, led by pianist Oscar Hernandez, is packed with veterans of New York's Salsa and Latin Jazz scenes: its members have played with everyone from Paul Simon to Celia Cruz, Tito Puente and Ray Barretto. Hernandez also arranged and performed the indelible theme song to HBO's hit series "Sex In the City."

After winning two Grammy Awards, the group visited WBGO to perform selections from their just-released fifth album, a fan-funded CD which features pianist Chick Corea and saxophonist Joe Lovano as guest artists.

The Spanish Harlem Orchestra performs at New York's Tribeca Performing Arts Center Nov. 21. Enjoy!

CONTRIBUTE | VOLUNTEER | LISTEN | SPREAD THE WORD

Mark your calendars!  #GivingTuesday 2014 will be on December 2, and this year, WBGO is on board! You may recall that WBGO has partnered on the Jazz in July festival at 92Y, so we reached out to our partners there to get involved in this annual day of giving.

92nd Street Y is a Jewish organization that welcomes and reaches out to people of all racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds.  Central to their mission is giving back, enriching people’s lives and creating community. They began doing those things in 1874, when the organization was founded.  Thinking about what it means to be a community center in a digitally connected world, the organization, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, founded #GivingTuesday in 2012.

Why #GivingTuesday? There were already Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and 92Y wanted to use the same kind of rallying point that the retail industry had used to drive sales, but direct it toward giving back.  Tuesday was "available," so they grabbed it, and set about turning the idea into a reality, and creating an "opening day" for the giving season.

Families and individuals are encouraged to be generous in whatever ways matter to them, whether that means volunteering at a local charity or donating to a favorite cause. In 2013, over 10,000 charities, volunteer organizations, corporations and foundations came together in 40+ countries with one common purpose:  to help others and to incentivize ways to give more, give smarter, and kick-off the holiday giving season.  This number was up from 2,500 partners who participated in the first #GivingTuesday in 2012.

Utilizing social media technology, the “hashtag” #GivingTuesday enabled the tracking of direct person to person discussion of the concept on sites like Facebook and Twitter. The hashtag was used over 406,000 times on Twitter in the week leading up to #GivingTuesday, with the conversation peaking on December 3, 2013 with an average of 186 mentions per minute. Major voices helped spread the word on social media, including the White House, Kevin Bacon, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Gates, Steve Case, Katie Couric, Al Roker, Arianna Huffington, and many others.

We hope that you will consider supporting WBGO on Giving Tuesday, and to that end, our members have contributed to match $1 for every $2 pledge that day. Listener support is the most reliable funding source for the station, and any amount is welcome. PLEDGE NOW!
