You can hear the life of Annie Ross in her singing.  She's … lived.  Just like her friend and inspiration Billie Holiday.  Lady In Satin was Billie's penultimate album and is one of the most deeply emotional albums ever made.  You also can hear in Billie's voice how much she's … lived.  I know some who can't listen to Lady in Satin — too painful.  Others have said it's Billie's greatest album.   Annie's new album, To Lady With Love, includes mostly songs from that album, and also Annie's poem for Lady Day.  Her "band" on the album: Pizzarelli pere et fils.  Bucky and John on the guitars.  We'll talk about Billie and singing and … life when Annie Ross joins me this Sunday (10/12) at noon on Singers Unlimited.

To open its 2014-15 season, Jazz At Lincoln Center welcomes the world premiere of a work by managing and artistic director Wynton Marsalis. Ochas, for big band and Afro-Cuban percussion, features special guests in the commanding pianist Chucho Valdés and percussionist, vocalist and Santería priest Pedrito Martinez. With the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, they blend jazz with the traditional folkloric and religious music of Cuba.

Jazz Night In America explores how the new suite of music came to be.
