During fund drives, the vibe in "Pledge Central" is comfortable. Like getting together with friends. We discuss current events , family experiences, music, and most of all, we meet new jazz music lovers . If you have not experienced this, you don't know what you are missing! As we raise funds to support WBGO, we are also having fun, lots of food and good music.

  • From the "Pledge Central" trenches

Well, April showers have brought May flowers and the May Fund drive. I am still amazed at Gary Walker's and Doug Doyle's ability to raise what seemed to be an impossible amount in the opening four hours of the drive. And here we are again, enjoying what I fondly call " Dinner at Sylvia's" and being amused, in between calls, with the antics of Awilda and Brian.

Looking back, the winter drive came fast on the heels of the demise of CD 101.9 and I personally answered many pledge calls from sad former WQCD listeners who often would say " we have to support WBGO - it's all we have left" and would pledge generously. In the May drive I have answered similar calls. Interestingly, one such former WQCD listener asked, as he opted for a straight ahead jazz thank-you gift, if we had anything by Alex Bugnon. It occurs to me that, just as we now have four hours' programming on Sunday night aimed at this newest addition to our audience, we also have some thank-you gifts for items that may appeal to them as well!

More to come as the bandwagon moves along. Hop on and contribute!

  • WBGO Studio Session - Jaleel Shaw Quintet

May 6, 2008. Posted by Joshua Jackson.

Watch "Flipside," from a studio session we did with saxophonist Jaleel Shaw.
Shaw was recently honored with an ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer award. His new record is called Optimism. [Great title]. On that recording, "Flipside" is in the lead-off position, as it was during our studio date.
We shot video only on the first take. The second was even better, and it will be part of the posted session. You'll have to wait until mid-month for that. Meanwhile, check out my other favorite sessions on NPR Music. And support young talent in jazz. Go to gigs. Buy records. And contribute to WBGO.
