WBGO on NPR's "10 Artists You Should Have Known in 2012"
December 24, 2012. Posted by Tim Wilkins.
Radio programmers from across the country were asked to select some of their favorite under-the-radar acts for the list. Our pick? Brazilian singer and guitarist Pedro Moraes, who will host a showcase of Brazilian "explorative" music at New York's (le) Poisson Rouge on January 14, with groups led by Ivo Senra, Elisa Cassini, Sergio Krakowski, Mauricio Zottarelli and Gabriel Santiago.
Moraes himself is a great introduction to Rio de Janeiro's adventurous music scene. Like Jason Moran, Lionel Loueke and other roots-minded jazz musicians, Moraes turns traditional rhythms and forms on their heads, and comes up surprising ways to embrace Brazil's rich musical tradition and carry it into the future.
Curious? You can visit this link at NPRMusic to download "Marcela," one of the tracks from Moraes' 2010 release, Claroescuro. Enjoy!
