WBGO Congratulates 2013 Sarah Vaughan Vocal Finalists
October 8, 2013. Posted by Tim Wilkins.
WBGO is proud to announce the finalists of the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition (SVVC): Teira Church, Lydia Harrell, Jazzmeia Horn, Barbra Lica and Camille Thurman. Click on each name to meet these talented young ladies and to hear them sing.
Along with Kate Davis, this year's SVVC "rising star," these five were chosen from hundreds of singers from around the world. They will perform November 10 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Victoria Theater for this year's "Sassy" Award, named in honor of legendary jazz singer and Newark native Sarah Vaughan, and prizes of up to $5,000.
This concert is the crowning event of the TD Bank James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival, which presents concerts at NJPAC and elsewhere in Newark from November 4 through 10. Judges include world-renowned jazz singers Al Jarreau, Janis Siegel, and Gretchen Parlato, WBGO music director Gary Walker and JAZZ ROOTS producer Larry Rosen.
WBGO looks forward to introducing you to these remarkable young talents, and we will interview all of the SVVC finalists on air before the competition. Who do you hope will win? Click here to let us know, and bookmark WBGO.ORG/SASSY for all the latest updates.
"“Sarah Vaughan always places among the top of our listener’s choice polls, and we look forward to the day when a winner of this competition might also become a mainstay of our programming,” says Amy Niles, WBGO's acting president and CEO.
Congratulations, ladies, and see you in November!
