Glenn Dicker, my son-in-law, is nuts about Christmas, and his Christmas "Dickerations" on the family's house in Chapel Hill are the most spectacular for miles around. Here's me, with my daughter Elizabeth, with last year's centerpiece, a Christmas Kong.
I knew that Elizabeth was marrying a cool guy when I first saw his record collection, including about a foot-wide of Slim Gaillard CD's. I was amazed all the more that there were that many Slim Gaillard CD's.
Glenn is enjoying great success as one of the owners of a record distributor, RedEye -- they distribute the labels of Branford Marsalis and Dave Holland -- and a record label, YepRoc -- named for one of Slim's classic songs, "YepRoc Heresy." Glenn's label puts out an extraordinary variety of music, from the Mexican-wrestler-mask-wearing instrumental rockers Los Straightjackets to several British pop stars: Robyn Hitchcock, Paul W eller, and especially Nick Lowe. WBGO is playing one of YepRoc's newest blues albums, Tony Joe White's "Hoodoo."
"Black Friday" is when most people go nuts shopping. On the day after Thanksgiving, Glenn lights up his Christmas extravaganza. There's always something new and flabbergasting. This year, there's a secret weapon: a lawn-wide Christmas DRAGON!

WBGO and the Gateway Center invite you to its FREE concert series occurring once a month during lunch time. We kick off 2014 with Cecil Brooks, his CB lll Band & HOT D.O.G. They perform at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, January 29 at Gateway Center Plaza 2, Newark, NJ.
Pittsburgh native Cecil Brooks, III is one of the hottest contemporary drummers on today’s jazz scene. This drummer’s aggressive and polyrhythmic style lends itself effectively to a wide variety of jazz settings, from straight-ahead and groove, to hard bop and bebop. As a leader, Cecil leads the CBIII band and HOT D.O.G (hot drum’s, organ, and guitar). This hornless trio of HOT D.O.G. encapsulates the tradition of the organ trio while bringing it current to the 21st century. The CBIII band adds horns to the musical cocktail. When you see the name Cecil Brooks III, start tapping your feet, bopping your head, and bending your hip!!! For when you hear him play you are in for quite a trip!
Bring your meal, friends, take a seat and enjoy live music at 2 Gateway. It's FREE!
