Meet The Jazz Audience: Frankie Graves
June 23, 2010. Posted by Joshua Jackson.
In the last few decades, June has become the busiest month for jazz in New York City, home to the biggest jazz scene in the world. But who is actually going to these shows? A small team of Bloggers Supreme has been attending the festivities -- primarily, the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York. In between our reports on various goings-on, we'll be talking to the some of the people who are actually in the audience. We start off every conversation with the simple question: how did you hear about this show? And be sure to check out more of our Meet The Jazz Audience series. --Ed.
Frankie Graves, 77
Performer: Winard Harper
Venue: Schomburg Center (Harlem)
Date: Sunday, Jun. 20, 2010 (Father's Day)
How did you find out about this Winard Harper concert? There's a lady that lives in my building that puts out a monthly newsletter, and she tries to include the musical concerts ... jazz concerts. I learn about it through there.
What did you think of the show? Wonderful. [Winard Harper]'s always fantastic. I never miss him. Anywhere he is, I try to see him.
What in particular do you like about him? He's an excellent musician. He seems to be a wonderful human being. He has a number of children. [Eleven, in fact. --Ed.] He seems to be a good father, a good husband. And you don't often find that in a lot of men, not only musicians (laughs).
How did you get into jazz? Oh, I've always been into jazz. My family always loved music. And we had Lil Green "In the Dark" and all those old records. And my brother-in-law had a club in Orlando, Fla., and he had a lot of musicians come into there. And in high school and college ... I just love it.
