This is the fifth annual globalFEST, held as part of the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters convention in NYC. It attracts a mix of music industry types and diggers of global music. This year, it's 12 acts on three stages, including
Lo Cor de la Plana, from Marseille; Gypsy rockers Little Cow, from Budapest; Puerto Plata, the 84-year-old Dominican Sonero and Brooklyn's own Pistolera, who I especially dig.
Here's a clip of their song Cazador (Hunter), a song about the Minutemen "border guards," which will give you an idea of where the (mostly) ladies are coming from.
(Sample lyric: Dicen que están protegiendo la tierra contra ilegales. Pero cómo? si esta misma tierra fue robada al mexicano?/They say they are protecting the country from the illegals But how, if this same land was stolen from the Mexicans?)
globalFEST is Sunday, January 13th at Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street, NYC. First set at 7:00pm.

Ross Porter is a cool guy. First, he loves jazz - so much that he writes books about it and makes TV about it and basically lives it. And he also makes some great Jazz radio. And he's got his own wiki entry. Oh yeah, he also shared some real maple syrup with Rhonda Hamilton when she interviewed him. It's a great conversation - Ross starts out talking about his book - The Essential Jazz Recordings. Take a listen:

Heritage for Tomorrow is a quartet from the Paris Conservatory (or, officially, the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris...ahh, the French...). They are led by the bassist Riccardo del Fra.
The quartet performed three songs during the IAJE Special Session earlier today. I had not heard of the three young musicians who joined del Fra onstage, but I was impressed.
Finally, the quartet performed a thoroughly modern reading of "I'm Old Fashioned." I'm not sure Jerome Kern would recognize it. I barely could.
That's it for today's early events. Tonight, I'm checking out shows from the Aaron Goldberg Trio with Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland, the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz All-Stars, New York Voices with Paquito D'Rivera, Lionel Loueke, and Ingrid Jensen's band, Nordic Connect. Come back soon for that. - Josh
