  • WBGO Says Goodbye To Sax Master Yusef Lateef

December 23, 2013. Posted by Tim Wilkins.

WBGO says goodbye to multi-reed master Yusef Lateef, who died Dec. 23 from prostate cancer. This "Gentle Giant" of the tenor saxophone, one of the first to bring non-Western instruments into his recordings and compositions, was named a NEA Jazz Master in 2010, the nation's highest honor for a jazz musician.

Lateef sat down with WBGO's Josh Jackson to celebrate that occasion, and we'd like to share that conversation with you again now. Thank you, Yusef, we will miss you!

As we reach the end of 2013, WBGO has looked back on the year in jazz and come up with not one, but TWO top ten lists. Well, one is a top 17 list, but you know what we mean...there is just a lot of great music out there and we are delighted to bring it to our listeners each and every day.

Tune in or log on on New Year's Eve at 8pm, just before Toast of the Nation, to hear Gary Walker and Michael Bourne talk about the best music of 2013.

  • Bourne's Journal: The Christmas Dragon Awakes

December 18, 2013. Posted by Michael Bourne.

Glenn Dicker, my son-in-law, is nuts about Christmas, and his Christmas
"Dickerations" on the family's house in Chapel Hill are the most
 spectacular for miles around.

Here's me, with my daughter Elizabeth, with last year's centerpiece, a
 Christmas Kong.

I knew that Elizabeth was marrying a cool guy when I first saw his record
collection, including about a foot-wide of Slim Gaillard CD's.  I was
amazed all the more that there were that many Slim Gaillard CD's.

    Glenn
is enjoying great success as one of the owners of a record distributor,
RedEye -- they distribute the labels of Branford Marsalis and Dave Holland
-- and a record label, YepRoc -- named for one of Slim's classic songs,
"YepRoc Heresy."  Glenn's label puts out an extraordinary variety of
music, from the Mexican-wrestler-mask-wearing instrumental rockers Los
Straightjackets to several British pop stars: Robyn Hitchcock, Paul
W eller, and especially Nick Lowe.  WBGO is playing one of YepRoc's newest
blues albums, Tony Joe White's "Hoodoo."

"Black Friday" is when most people go nuts shopping.  On the day
after Thanksgiving, Glenn lights up his Christmas extravaganza.  There's
always
something new and flabbergasting. This year, there's a secret weapon: a lawn-wide Christmas DRAGON!
