The Jazz Foundation of America hosted a special concert at (le) Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street in New York City, to benefit musicians affected by Hurricane Sandy. They hope to raise $100,000 from concertgoers and those who watch the concert online.
The hurricane swept away the electricity, homes and livelihoods of many musicians. Music-rich neighborhoods, including Manhattan's Lower East Side and West Village, and Brooklyn's Red Hook, were seriously damaged, as were Staten Island, the Rockaways and the Jersey Shore.
Wendy Oxenhorn, executive director of the JFA, went door to door to visit musicians in affected areas. She described her visit to one elderly musician in the blackout zone in this way:
"When we found our way into his building (we knew which apartment he was in because we could hear him playing his horn) the tears in his eyes when he opened the door and saw that someone came looking for him was overwhelming. When he saw the four of us there with water and food he said, 'Who are you? And, I love you.'"
Wendy and the JFA know a thing or two about hurricanes. They have helped more than a thousand New Orleans musicians rebuild their lives after Katrina, and provide emergency food, medical care and financial aid to more than six thousand musicians in need every year.
Thank you, Wendy and the JFA!
Tonight's benefit concert is a co-production with Truth Revolution Records, Revive Music, Motema Music and DL Media, will feature more than ten bands and over fifty musicians. A partial set list is below.
