Singer Sandra Booker talks with WBGO's Rhonda Hamilton about her growing up in New Orleans, education in Los Angeles, and approach to music. Booker is a finalist in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, whose finals will be held on Sunday, October 21 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Performance Arts Center in Newark.

The competition is the final event of the inaugural James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival, co-presented by NJPAC and WBGO-FM.

Hamilton hosts Sunday's concert, and you can listen to her interviews with finalists -Cyrille Aimée, Alexis Cole, Hilary Kole, Sandra Booker and Monifa Brown's interview with finalist Ashleigh Smith, - as well as Gary Walker's conversation with the producer of the competition, Larry Rosen, right here on the WBGO blog. Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West share their memories of tenor saxophonist James Moody, who is being celebrated this week in the inaugural James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The pair's weekly radio show on current events, "Smiley & West," is broadcast on WBGO-FM every Saturday at 6 a.m.

Singer Hilary Kole talks with WBGO's Rhonda Hamilton about her upbringing in a musical family, early exposure to Broadway and jazz, and experiences singing with big bands and symphony orchestras. Kole is a finalist in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, whose finals will be held on Sunday, October 21 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Performance Arts Center in Newark.
