October 21, 2011. Posted by Becca Pulliam.

Listen to JazzSet this Sunday, October 23, at 6 p.m. for the Danilo Perez Trio and dance to conguero Poncho Sanchez, in Surround Sound. Here's a 30-second taste from JazzSet host Dee Dee Bridgewater:

Pianist Perez comes from Panama. In 1989, Dizzy Gillespie brought him into the United Nation Orchestra, and a career was born. Danilo is a long-time member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet, records for Mack Avenue, and leads the fine trio we’ll hear on JazzSet.

Sanchez, the conguero from Southern California, came to jazz under the wing of Cal Tjader. The Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band has made an album a year for approximately 25 years for the Concord label; those albums get played often on WBGO.

If you miss JazzSet on Sunday, try again Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. And as always, you can hear the show any time on demand through the JazzSet page on wbgo.org.

Perez and Sanchez headlined the 2010 Encuentro! Latin Jazz Festival at NJPAC. JazzSet hopes to see you at the 2011 Encuentro! Latin Jazz Festival on October 28-29. Also, this Saturday, October 22, at Flushing Town Hall in Queens, there is a related celebration, the Encuentro! Family Day.

The award honors living jazz masters from the mid-Atlantic region who have achieved distinction in performance and education. Congratulations, Phil Woods!
