DJF's Chris Harrington, Jim DiFeo, Mike DiFeo

Jim and his son Michael of Union, NJ, arrived in Detroit on Friday. The awesome Chris Harrington, DJF Director of Marketing, is one of the first people they met. On Sunday morning, Jim wrote . . .

Both Michael and I are having a great time and the shows have been super. Friday evening we saw Take  6 with Mulgrew Miller and also Tower of Power; both were very good shows. Yesterday we attended the following shows: Tia Fuller (Outstanding); her band was also incredible. She is a rising star. Danilo Perez (outstanding), Fabulous Thunderbirds, Pat Bianchi Trio and closed the night out with The Mike LeDonne Quartet who were awesome. Mike LeDonne had some of NY's finest in the quartet such as Peter Bernstein on guitar, Eric Alexander on Tenor and Joe Farnsworth on  drums.

And one day later, he continued . . . It is now Monday the last day of the festival and we are having a great time. Yesterday we we saw Matt Wilson with the Detroit Symphony Civic Jazz Orch, and the Maria Schneider Orch, who were very moving with their set. We also saw the great Ernie Andrews who is an amazing performer. I cannot believe the energy that Ernie has at his age. Lastly we saw Christian McBride, Benny Green & Karriem Wiggins perform a tribute to the late, great Ray Brown. This performance was the highlight of the day.

Allen Toussaint on the big screen

Today Michael and I will be doing a lot of running and juggling shows so that we can see the ever youthful and amazing Roy Haynes and then Branford Marsalis, Manhattan Transfer with Mr. Gerald Wilson, Kurt Elling, and Mr. Allen Toussaint. What a line-up and what a way to wrap up the festival. Michael & I have met a lot of nice people here at the festival. The people of Detroit are very friendly and have made us feel very welcome. Everyone from WBGO has made us feel welcome. We really appreciate that we were selected to come to this festival and we will never forget it. WBGO is the BEST radio station in WORLD.

It's been said that years ago, training was so rigorous at Cass Tech High School in Detroit that students graduating received the equivalent of Masters-degree training today. Trumpeter and bandleader Gerald Wilson was one of those students. Last year he wrote a musical suite for Detroit. This year he directed the Detroit Civic Jazz Orchestra in a rousing performance.

The New Orleans Legend played a solo set, choosing, "some songs I'm glad I wrote, some songs I wish I'd written, and some songs I wish I hadn't."
