Organist Rhoda Scott: Steaming and Streaming Live on WBGO
November 22, 2011. Posted by Simon Rentner.
Add new comment | Filed under: Jazz Alive, Live Music, Live Music BloggingThe jazz organ world is abuzz: after forty years in Paris, Rhoda Scott has returned to her home state of New Jersey. She stopped by the WBGO studios this past Friday night for a heated in-studio session with Leo Johnson on tenor saxophone and Victor Jones on drums. Hear the entire show, which includes Scott's conversation with WBGO's Eulis Cathey, by clicking on the link below.

Rhoda ScottAfter making waves in and around Newark in the 1960s, and completing a master's degree in music theory at the Manhattan School of Music, Scott went to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger. French audiences, and her future husband, fell in love with her and she stayed.
Rhoda Scott is now back in New Jersey, swinging harder than ever. She is currently enrolled in the Jazz History & Research graduate program on the Newark campus of Rutgers University, focusing on music theory and the role of the organ in the development of jazz harmony.

Scott's delicate touch on the organ, knowledge of its sonic capabilities and her innate sense of groove are just a few of her many musical virtues. She says many young musicians in Europe say her records were their first exposure to jazz, and that "there is a young guard of organists in France, Holland and Belgium who credit me for having been interested in organ."
On December 3, 2011, Newark's Symphony Hall will host Scott and others in an all-star organ jam to close out a year of performances which also included one of WBGO's own Kids Jazz Concerts in October; the series will return Spring 2012.
We are thankful that more jazz fans on this side of the Atlantic will at last get to experience Rhoda Scott in person; but in the meantime, enjoy this smokin' live broadcast!
