  • WBGO Says Goodbye to Allen Toussaint

November 10, 2015. Posted by Steve Williams.

    Toussaint

Legendary musician, composer and producer Allen Toussaint has died. He was 77. Sources reported that he suffered a heart attack shortly after finishing a performance in Madrid, Spain.

The award-winning artist was responsible for introducing the much of the world to the R&B heritage of his hometown, New Orleans, via a string of international hits such as "Working in Coal Mine". Many of his compositions became famous after being recorded by the Rolling Stones, The Who, Bo Diddley and many others.

Toussaint was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Allen Toussaint was also a friend to WBGO; here's an interview he conducted with us in 2008 and a live performance for WBGO's Live at the Village Vanguard series in December 2009.

November 4, 2015. Posted by Alex Ariff.

Pianist Chris Pattishall speaks about Mary Lou Williams, specifically her 1944 long-form composition, the "Zodiac Suite." Since 2012, Chris has worked on transcribing the entire piece -- written mostly for piano, bass and drums -- and re-orchestrating it for jazz quintet. Chris walks us through examples from Williams' recording juxtaposed with his own interpretation. Produced by Alex Ariff.

Ben Sidran is known to many NPR listeners as the longtime host of  “Jazz Alive” and “Sidran on Record.” He’s a free-spirited pianist and author who’s been dubbed “the first existentialist jazz rapper.”

Leo is a musician and producer whose credits include the Academy Award-winning song “Al Otro Lado Del Rio,” from the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries.

He’s also the host of The Third Story, a podcast series of unguarded conversations with musicians and other creative artists.

“It’s a perfect match,” says Ben. “WBGO is the flagship jazz station in the world, and Newport is the flagship festival. We’re so excited to be here, together.”

The Sidrans paid close attention to the festival’s embrace of new and emerging talent, such as twelve-year-old pianist Joey Alexander and the Brooklyn-based band Snarky Puppy.

"What I really love about the feeling this year is that there’s so much talk about the future,” says Leo.

Highlights of their Newport coverage include encounters and interviews with Jon Batiste, Jamie Cullum, Bob Dorough, James Carter, Jack DeJohnette and much, much more. We hope you enjoy it!

Follow all of their future adventures at WBGO.ORG/SIDRAN.

    Welcome, Leo and Ben!
