Watch a video webcast of trumpeter Wallace Roney and violinist Regina Carter at the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 9 p.m.
In the late 1960s, saxophonist Wayne Shorter wrote a number of large ensemble works for Miles Davis his employer at the time. They were never recorded, and eventually forgotten.
Decades later, Shorter, now considered one of jazz's greatest composers, dug up the music and handed it over to trumpeter Wallace Roney, a Davis protégé, to breathe new life into the charts.
Roney presents that suite of music — or what he could before rain showers interceded — on this webcast of Jazz Night In America, live at the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival.
Over Labor Day weekend, the Detroit Jazz Festival annually presents a free, three-day outdoor event regularly attended by some of the biggest names in the music. Detroit native Regina Carter was also among the guests this year, and she leads off the webcast with music from her newest recording, Southern Comfort.

September 22, 2014. Posted by Carmen Balentine.
WBGO Jazz 88.3FM & 2 Gateway Center present Chris Washburne & the SYOTOS Band . This free concert is hosted by WBGO’s Sheila Anderson of Weekend Jazz After Hours and will be held outdoors in the Championship Plaza (also known as Prudential Plaza on Market & Mulberry Street) in downtown Newark, NJ on Wednesday, October 1 at 12pm.
This group electrified a Newark audience at our free concert in May 2014 with their musical combination of Afro-Cuban, funk, jazz, gospel, and contemporary classical music. Trombonist Chris Washburne’s musical activities cross many styles and cultural borders. He has performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Justin Timberlake, Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, David Byrne, Paquito D’Rivera, among many others. His SYOTOS (See You on the Other Side) band is a NY institution featuring alumni from the bands of Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Ray Barretto. You will not want to miss the group that has held the longest running Latin jazz gig in New York, performing weekly for 20 years straight.
Come celebrate WBGO’s 35th anniversary as a cultural institution for jazz with a performance that will be unforgettable. We are your jazz source.
