Add new comment | Filed under: Jazz Alive, JazzSetWord from out west sez that this Wednesday, 7/28, JazzSet host Dee Dee Bridgewater will sit in for the entire hour with the Rickey Minor Big Band (the house band) on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I'll bet she sings music from her current CD of songs from the Billie Holiday book, Dee Dee style. The lucky people in the live audience will get more than the TV audience.

Earlier this month on Facebook, Dee Dee Bridgewater posted this video -- a news piece about an attractive vocalist coming to Jazz a Vienne in France. The reporter begins by noting that the singer looks familiar, and there's a reason.

At the conclusion of the piece, China Moses and her mother are onstage, in action -- China in the foreground, DDB at her side. China's current album is a tribute to Dinah Washington. Her pianist is Raphael Lemonnier. Their label is Blue Note in Europe. China's website has more.

Note #1: On June 8, the Queen's official birthday, at a reception at Her Majesty's Consul General's Residence (near the UN), the Queen (not present) bestowed the honour of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire upon Margaret Marian McPartland, who was present and seated under a good-sized Andy Warhol portrait of the Queen. Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz was noted in the presentation.Note #2: Sunday June13 at 6pm and Wednesday June 16 at 6:30 in a broadcast premiere on JazzSet, pianist Edward Simon - now a Guggenheim Fellow and member of the SF JAZZ Collective - presents his piece Sorrows and Triumphs . The performance by the septet Afinidad comes from the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, AR. David Binney is co-leader. The entire concert is really neat! Mystical and musical.
